SAFSS run a weekly Parents and Carers Support Group for South Asian parents who have a child or adult with a disability. Currently SAFSS does not receive any funding for this service and we rely on the generosity of small-scale fundraising activities to finance this service.
The group is led by the parents and activities can range from coffee mornings, to swimming and the gym, to meals out and trips to the shops. The group do attend many consultation events, such as the Aiming High for Disabled Children consultation and host talks from outside professionals.
The aim of the group is to support parents who have a child or adult with a disability to access a range of community activities and to support their emotional and social needs. One-to-one support is available for those parents who request it although the majority of the support provided is peer-to-peer. The group is supported by a worker who can speak the main South Asian languages and can communicate with parentsand translate where required.
During 2008/09 we supported 15 parents and carers and if funds allowed we know that we could support many, many more. Our aim for 2009/10 is to research and identify ways of developing this service and securing funding.
Our Parents and Carers Group meet every Thursday. If you would liketo join our group please call Jas on (0121) 558 2198 carers.safss@btconnect.com for more information. All calls are in confidence.
