For many years SAFSS has run an After School Club supported by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council Carers Grant. The aims of the Smiling Stars After School Club is to give parents and carers of South Asian children with disabilities a short break from their caring responsibilities. Sessions are held every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays with sessions continuing though the school holidays.
The After School Club is a free play environment where a child has the opportunity to participate in activities of their choice. Activities are selected based on service user feedback, group and individual consultations and in accordance with the Quality in Play standard. SAFSS makes sure that all our services are working inaccordance with the Every Child Matters (ECM) and Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) Outcomes and all our service users have an equal choice to enjoy and achieve and make a positive contribution to the club in a safe environment.
Consultation with the children is central to the after school club and SAFSS works in line with the UN Conventions on the Rights of the Child regarding choice, consultation and independence. We work closely with schools and other professionals to develop behaviour management plans where children need support. A key worker system is also in place and observations and consultations take place to build on the individual interests of the child.
Our Co-ordinator has developed excellent relationships with parents and during the year completed training on Parents, Early Years and Learning (PEAL) to establish a framework for including parents in their childs learning and development. Parents expect a good working relationship with settings and at SAFSS we involve parents in every aspect of the Club. We have an open door policy to settling in and sessions are arranged to support and give parents confidence in the setting. Parents are encouraged to observe all our different sessions before joining SAFSS to identify what service is most appropriate for their child. We also encourage parents to share children’s experiences from home or school so that we can continue to build on that learning in the after school club.
Our After School Club is registered with Ofsted and at out latest inspection we received an Outstanding for Enjoying and Achieving and an overall Good rating. During the year the After School Club built on its award-winning success of 2007 and continued to provide a quality play environment delivering 150 sessions for over 30 children. Sixty-two carers were also supported through this service and received a short-break from their caring responsibilities.
All care staff who work in the After School Club hold a minimum of NVQ level 2 in Playwork and/or Care and we work closely with the local schools to support all children who attend the club.
Children who attend our club have the opportunity to participate in many activities and this year we have visited Drayton Manor Park, gone bowling and attended many other soft play centres.
Our aims for the After School Club in 2009/10 are to recruit more qualified male playworkers, to complete our Quality in Play standard and to complete the Me2 Quality Award.
