In May 2008 SAFSS launched a new After School Project supported by BBC Children in Need. The After School Club (Monday Group) is funded for three years and is for children who have more complex disabilities. This group follows the same structures, registrations, policies and procedures as our existing After School Club but with activities tailored to individual need. Our After School Co-ordinator identified that some children’s needs could be best met through smaller groups, one-to-one care and two-to-one care. By having a smaller group (up to a maximum of seven children) sessions can be tailored to individual and specific needs, including more focus on sensory and therapeutic activities. In addition, a wider selection of communication tools can be used to ensure that sessions are service user led.

We would like to thank BBC Children in Need for funding this project and are delighted to report that the first year of this project has been a success. All 44 planned sessions and activities for 2008/09 have taken place and our end of year report to BBC Children in Need has been accepted and further funding released. We are meeting the aims of this project which are to increase the opportunities available for disabled children to further develop their personal social skills, to enable children to make informed choices about play activities that they can participate in and to enable parents and carers to have a short break from their caring responsibilities.
SAFSS are providing a safe and stimulating environment for children to play and develop as well as providing a high quality care service. During the year we have had a core number of children attending, several new referrals and are now operating a waiting list.
