The group, supported by Children in Need provides a place for children with complex and multiple disabilities to further develop their personal, social and emotional skills through play. The sessions also gives parents and carers respite from their caring responsibilities. Sessions run on a Monday from 3-6pm at our centre in Smethwick.

Chief Executive Parpinder K Dhatt said “I would like to thank Children in Need for their continued support of SAFSS’ After School Club and the South Asian children and young people with disabilities that we work with. We look forward to another successful year.”

We currently have vacancies in our After School Club. Please contact Sayma or Neelam on (0121) 558 2198 for further details.

Funding secured for benefits service

Following a successful first year HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have confirmed they will continue to fund part of SAFSS Liaison and Outreach Service until 2011.

The HMRC funded project provides information and guidance to help South Asian families who has a child with a disability apply for specific HMRC products. The project focuses on promoting 3 key products – Tax Credits, Child Trust Funds and Child Benefit.

This project achieves the HMRC strategic outcome 1 – To deliver key messages to hard to reach groups, resulting in an increased take-up of HMRC products.

If you are a parent of a South Asian child or children who has a disability please contact Usha Ghai or Neelam Pallen on (0121) 558 2198 and they will complete a benefits assessment to see if SAFSS can help.

SAFSS are IB ready!

Do you have an Individualised Budget (IB) to spend?

If you have a care or support plan, an individualised budget or direct payments, SAFSS’ culturally sensitive services can be tailored to meet your individual and family needs. Whether you need care in the home, centre-based care or want to access universal services in the community, SAFSS can help. Our qualified care staff can also accompany you to appointments and meetings and provide support with translating and interpreting.

THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE COMES TO SAFSS

As part of our continual development of services we are pleased to offer therapeutic massage as part of our domiciliary care service to South Asian children and young people who have a disability or life limiting condition.

All our staff are qualified to a minimum of NVQ level 2 in Care and have received training in therapeutic massage from a trained physiotherapist at the Orchards School, Oldbury. Our staff are trained on a one-to-one basis and are taught skills and techniques appropriate for each individual child. Staff continue to work closely with a child’s physiotherapist to ensure that the therapeutic massage is in line with the child’s needs and disability.

“STILL PROVIDING AN EXCELLENT SERVICE”

“Excellent” was the response of the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) following a quality inspection of SAFSS domiciliary care service.

The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) assesses how well outcomes are being met for South Asian children, young people and adults who have a disability.

CSCI surveyed SAFSS service users, their parents and carers, and staff – and the feedback highlights the organisation’s achievements in meeting the needs of South Asian children and young people who have a disability.

In particular the AQAA notes how SAFSS meets equality and diversity standards and how religious and language needs are accomodated through appointing South Asian staff.

The development of appropriate communication tools was also noted, including the use of Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Makaton and flash cards.

The AQAA assessment follows a successful full inspection of the domiciliary care service in February 2008 for which the service was awarded a rating of 3* Excellent.
